In the 1960s, before selfies or iPhones, photographer Melissa Shook was quietly and desperately documenting her daughter Krissy’s daily existence. In this short documentary Shook’s rarely seen photographs and only recently developed super 8 footage reveal an intimate memento of a mother and her daughter. 

 

While male photographers in the 60s and 70s often focused on more public and political themes, Shook’s lens was up close and personal, occupied with her own compulsions and single motherhood.  Shook’s need to constantly photograph became a collaboration with her daughter capturing an array of tender, odd, funny, painful and exuberant moments of girlhood, New York, and experimentation in a woman artist’s life.  Produced by Krissy after her mother’s death in 2020.
